The true 100 Yen shop in Osaka

28th Jan 2007 by Ian · 14 Comments

100 yen shops are your friend if you’re living in Osaka and on a budget. One of the best chains is the Daikoku (ダイコク) chain, which is a drug store (chemist) and 100 yen shop combined. They are easy to spot as they have bright orange signs like this.

Daikoku Drug Store and 100 Yen Shop

The thing that is special about them is that 100 Yen items really are 100 Yen, as they don’t add on the 5% sales tax. I know it seems a small difference but it can add up especially if you live here any amount of time.

Plus on the following days of the month they have special offers:

  • 10th: Buy eleven 100 Yen items for the price of ten
  • 3rd and 20th: No tax on items from the drug store side of the shop

They also have some of the lowest prices on a lot of toiletries and drug store items.

Keep up the useful info as it is very helpful to me.

I’d do my best to make this blog a useful resource. I think the list of sales days isn’t complete, I’ll fill it in the next time I am down there.

Can you tell me where the Daiso shop in Nipponbashi is located?

    Ian,
Do you happen to know the address of the DAISO location in Nihonbashi (sp)? I have found some very cool calligraphy supplies at the Sakae Skyle location in Nagoya, but won’t be back there for another few months. Any help you can give would be appreciated!!

Hey, can you let me know where some of the large 100 yen shops are in Osaka? I am traveling to Osaka but will only be there a few days ( I used to live there for a year..years ago).I’d like to buy a few things and am on a schedule so won’t have much to time to look for 100 yen shops.

    Hi Susan,
I know the one you’re talking about. The address is
    556-0011 大阪府大阪市浪速区難波中2丁目2-17

    In romaji it is:
    Namba Naka 2-2-17
    Naniwa-ku
    Osaka City
    Osaka Prefecture
    556-0011

and here is a Google Map link:
    Daiso in Namba Map

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Frederick,

I don’t know that many big 100 yen shops. Apart from the one mentioned above in Namba there is one or two in Shinsaibashi along the main shopping arcade.

Here’s a map if you are interested in finding them. It’s the blue line on the map, and they will be on your left. As far as I can remember they are beside each other.

Of course, if any other readers know of others, please feel free to leave details here in the comments.

There is also a 100 yen shop at the Tempozan Park, it’s on the 3rd floor where the giant ferris wheel is. It’s got a large selection of kitchen items, in case you are just moving to the area.

Daikoku is great. Nice post about this little Osaka gem.

Also for those of you looking for 100 shops, try the Daiso homepage. They list the biggest ones. In Kansai you have to go to the Tsukashin shopping center in the Itami / Amagasaki area. There’s a great Onsen there too.
